    Sustainability

With a History Stretching Back More than 150 Years, We Think Long-Term

As a Cooperative Central Bank, we are solely accountable to our owners, the Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken in Germany and thus indirectly to their approximately 30 million customers. More than half of these customers are themselves members of their cooperative bank. The business model of our Cooperative Financial Network is based on the cooperative idea that 'many can achieve what one cannot achieve alone'. Together with our subsidiaries, we develop products for the independent local cooperative banks, which have been rooted in their region for decades. In addition, as a corporate bank, we serve companies and institutions that require a national banking partner.

The cooperative banks have a long tradition of corporate responsibility and sustainability. The basic cooperative idea itself was based on the notion of solving economic and social problems together. We continue to uphold this tradition today. In the banking sector, it is precisely the large number of small, independent cooperative banks that contributes to the stability of the industry. This, in turn, is a prerequisite for sustainable economic development.

  • The Cooperative Financial Network Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken

The Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken Cooperative Financial Network is a unique community of strong financial companies that can provide the right point of contact for every financial project.

The Cooperative Financial Network Is One of the Largest Banking Groups in Germany

It includes around 700 local cooperative banks, the central bank DZ BANK, the companies of the DZ BANK Group – from the Bausparkasse Schwäbisch Hall to Union Investment – as well as various special institutions.

The strength of the cooperative financial network is based on shared cooperative roots and values such as solidarity, partnership and trust, as well as a culture of openness and transparency. The idea of forming cooperatives to insure against risks and combine economic success with social well-being is over 170 years old and more relevant today than ever. Cooperatives operate sustainably and responsibly. They enable the implementation of new ideas, support their members and are firmly rooted in the region.

    A Thought Becomes Cultural Heritage

March 2018 marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen. Through his work and his cooperative idea, he was able to noticeably improve people's lives and the economy. In 2016, UNESCO also recognized that his idea continues to have an impact today.

„Raiffeisen. Brilliant Idea!“

The idea of Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen, the founder of the cooperative idea, is as relevant today as ever: In 2024, there were almost 7,000 cooperatives in Germany with more than 22 million members. Furthermore, the cooperative idea has been part of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage since November 2016. We are pleased about this decision, because cooperative companies and credit unions are an important part of the small and medium-sized business sector and society in Germany. Cooperatives operate sustainably and over the long term, focusing on the promotion of their members and the region, and they are rising to the great challenges of our time.

On May 11, 2017, Maria Böhmer, Minister of State at the Federal Foreign Office, presented the UNESCO certificate awarding the 'Idea and Practice of Organizing Common Interests in Cooperatives' as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The cooperative idea has a long tradition, but above all a bright future – that is the essential point.

Prof. Dr. Maria Böhmer, President of the German UNESCO Commission
